WIld Rebel by Laura Browning
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 stars for Laura Browning’s new historical romance Wild Rebel. Ms. Browning weaves a tale set during the American Revolutionary War, Maggie MacDonald knows the love of two men, British Major Nathaniel Fordham and Colonial Major Samuel Sinclair. Maggie, a renown weaver and healer rescues Nathaniel under adverse circumstances and unknowingly and unwillingly becomes involved in the conflict between the two great powers. I’m not normally a reader of historicals but this one drew me in. I’ve lived near the Guilford Battlefield in North Carolina for years but didn’t really know the history until I read this book. And the best part – it’s the beginning of a series!

Elfstonbridge Tales by Hannah Meredith

A delightful read. I’ve been reading Hannah Meredith and Kate Parker for years, now I’ll be adding Louisa Cornell. Three tales of Elfstonbridge, a place where you know if you belong. Highest recommendations! Don’t miss this one.

Redemption's Price

Redemption’s Price by Davida Ann Samenski
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Davida Samenski has done it again. Five stars to her newest creation, Redemption’s Price.
Jocelyne Blackstone thinks she’s escaped her past and moved on to a new and better life by moving to Redemption, Texas far from the coastal North Carolina where she was born. And it’s true, until she looks up to find Rafe standing there. Rafe Walker is on a mission set by Jocelyne’s father to find her and bring her back to face justice. He doesn’t question his mentor; besides he believes the worst about her. He was there to see it himself. She ruined his life and it’s time she pays. Ms. Samenski has drawn a rich historical in the background of the American west, with enough mystery to keep you wondering and filled with fully fleshed characters with flaws and foibles that truly exist. No spoilers, but my highest recommendation. Don’t miss this one.

Down In the Valley (Green Valley, #1)Down In the Valley by Jane Shoup
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A great read with deep, fully rounded characters. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting these people and following their adventures. Em is a strong woman who’s willing to take a chance to be free and love on her own. Tommy has suffered as well, maybe more, and has learned to believe what was said to and about him. Together these two damaged people discover their possibilities. Jane Shoup is a relatively new author for me, but I’ve become a fan and will be checking out more of her books.

Faithless in Death (In Death, #52)

Faithless in Death by J.D. Robb

I’ve read the entire In Death series, but this is one of my absolute favorites. It felt timely and the villians were spot on. Besides, who could ever resist Roarke and Dallas. You should read this one!!

On the Brink: A Devil’s Seed MC RomanceOn the Brink: A Devil’s Seed MC Romance by B.L. Harris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was my first Motorcycle Club book and I’m already anxiously awaiting Harris’s next book. When a proper lady and CPA of all things collapses at Dog’s feet he’s drawn into caring for and about someone outside his spectrum. He’s a bare knuckles fighter, gritty and not the kind of guy that would normally be attracted to someone like Charley. Fortunately that doesn’t slow him down at all. A great book in a new-to-me genre. Highest recs!!

Hearts of Carolina: a Charity Romance AnthologyHearts of Carolina: a Charity Romance Anthology by HCRW Writers
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love North Carolina – it has everything from mountains to coast – reading stories all based there was wonderful. I saw some names I recognized and enjoy and some new names that I know I’ll be buying the future.

Samantha Covington is a new author. Her paranormal romance about finding someone with the same powers was fresh and engaging. Laurel McMacken, also new to you, had a contemporary romance that brought my beloved mountains to the forefront. I’m definitely looking for more from her. B.L. Harris’s gritty MC romance was intriguing (I’m not an MC romance reader normally) but I will be checking to see what she does next. Maggie Preston’s internet sci fi off the coast was fascinating and I didn’t see the end coming. I always like that.

Linda Tiffin’s second work was as good as the first and I’m anxiously awaiting her second book. LaVerne St. George’s contemporary was very timely and fascinating and of course Laura Browning has been a favorite for years – the scene in the back yard… well you need to read it! I don’t review my own, but I really enjoyed writing about the Brown Mountain Lights – which has been part of my mythology all my life. Highest recs!

ExposureExposure by Leslie Ray
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Great new book by a favorite author. Part rom-com – don’t miss the faucet scene – and part angst when the truth of their past comes out. Julia is a strong woman, taking care of herself for a long time, but when Miles keeps cropping up everywhere, does she need protection? First in a promising new series. Highest recs for a new-to-you author.

The Segonian (Aldebarian Alliance #2)The Segonian by Dianne Duvall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dianne Duvall has been a one-click purchase for me since the beginning and this new series is just as good as the Immortal Guardian series. Of course Dagon is as yummy as all of her heroes, but Eliana stole the show for me in this one – her interactions with the crew of the Ranasura had me laughing out loud at times. Highest recs and if Dianne’s writing is new to you, congratulations. You have a ride ahead of you!

The Last Straw (The Jigsaw Files, #4)The Last Straw by Sharon Sala
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Charlie and Wyrick drew me in again with the 4th book in the Jigsaw Files. I love their interaction and growing relationship. Since Wyrick revealed her past to the world, Charlie’s protectiveness has endeared him even more to me. While an excellent end to the series, I’m going to miss these guys. Ms. Sala really captured these characters and made them people I wanted to know. Fortunately I have a lot of other books from her I can catch up on.

One of Nancy’s best – makes me want to start reading historicals again. Adele is a strong woman and I fell in love with her. She can keep Stone in line, even by just pointing out his brogue. You’ll enjoy this one!

Love by Design (Designed By Love Book 1)Love by Design by Linda Tiffin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The debut novel by Linda Tiffin, Love By Design, was just what I needed. It took me away and gave me a perfect growing relationship with just the right amount of intrigue and mystery into what’s happening around them. Breeze is a strong, independent woman, which always appeals to me, and Finn is the hunk of everyone’s dreams. You need to give this writer a try!

His Misplaced CountessHis Misplaced Countess by Davida Ann Samenski
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Davida Samenski has hit it out of the park. The book starts with a bang and doesn’t let up. They were split apart by circumstances beyond their control and kept that way. When Phin first sees Caro, his mistress’s dressmaker something pricks his memory and the writing makes that work. If you enjoy Regency and seeing the Ton get their due, you’ll really enjoy this one, highest recs.

Blind Faith (The Jigsaw Files Book 3)Blind Faith by Sharon Sala
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the third in the Jigsaw Files series and my fingers are all crossed that it’s not the last. I love Wyrick and Charlie and learning more about Wyrick’s past was fascinating. This is one of my favorite series now and I highly recommend you read the whole thing!

Three Thousand BridgesThree Thousand Bridges by James Hime
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve read all of Jim Hime’s books and was happy to find one I’d missed. This was not the book I expected, it was so much more. An amazing insight into the demons that haunt and format a person’s life. His father hurt him, Viet Nam shaped him, then came 9/11. I learned a lot more than I expected, the research on this book astounds me. My highest recommendations –I’m giving it 5 stars because I can’t give it 6.

Heaven-sent Flame by Nancy Lee Badger
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the 3rd and final book in the Heaven Sent Warrior series by Nancy Lee Badger. I was so delighted that the warrior this time was female. I’m such a fan of strong women. Marigold is strong and a witch, who had been in charge of protecting her coven. When Marigold finds herself in an unfamiliar place, and watches a man that catches her attention kissing a dark haired seductress, she knows things have gone weird, but how and why? If you’re familiar with Raleigh, you should check out this series.

The Lasaran (Aldebarian Alliance, #1)The Lasaran by Dianne Duvall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dianne Duvall is one of my one-click authors. She never disappoints and has again hit it out of the park with The Lasaran. This is a new spin off (and hopefully long) series from the Immortal Guardians. Since reading Darkness Dawns she had held me enthralled. This new series, with glimpses of old and dear friends also brought in a ton of new and intriguing characters and possibilities. (I’m especially fascinated with Ari’k and what Lisa might mean for women’s lib in her new surroundings.) Don’t miss this series!!

This is the second in this series and I need to go back and read the first one. I love the possible paranormal and this one really fit that bill! The characters are fully realized and I like that the hero is not necessarily smooth all the time. If you’re into paranormal, try this series – you won’t be disappointed.

Evergreen Crystals by Sherri Lupton Hollister
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the 4th book in the Leeward Files series uncovering the dark underbelly of a small town. The corruption is generations old and no longer as easy to keep quiet. Especially when one person wanting to help is going about it in a questionable way. Make sure to read this series in order!

Rescuing Christmas: a Small Town Sweet Romance by Nancy Lee Badger
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A sweet Christmas read. I love strong women and Elinor, acting Chief for the fire department has to be just that. Resentment over her leadership slips through. When she is called to rescue a traveler from one of her own trucks, she sets all kinds of interactions in motion. Bradley, usually all business, gets thrown off course by the small town fire department and its only female. Enjoy this holiday read and wait for the snow.

Noah Allred has returned to Mountain Meadows but not the way he wanted. I’ve been following the Mountain Meadows family for some time and was delighted when Noah got his own book. He’s messed up and angry, not even sure he wants to continue. When Amanda Brown gives him no slack, it makes it worse, for a while. These characters are fully formed and intriguing. It can be read as a stand-alone and still give you a taste of the community you’ll want to know better. Highest recs!

Death of Darkness (Immortal Guardians, #9)Death of Darkness by Dianne Duvall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I gave this 5 stars because I can’t see how to give it 6. This is book 9 in the Immortal Guardians series and I’ve been a fan since book 1. Learning Seth’s story was fascinating and of course seeing old friends is always a treat for me. This is one of my favorite series ever and I highly recommend it.

An Accidental Love AffairAn Accidental Love Affair by Davida Ann Samenski
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love the ‘encounter’ in the airport – having suffered a fall like that, I’m glad she had a better time than I did! The fact that Reece steps up immediately gave me a better feeling about him, that though he’s famous, he remembers his manners and upbringing. I really enjoyed their banter and ease with one another. The brother was a true wank and perfect villain. Highly recommended! Enjoy yourself with this one.

Guarded HeartsGuarded Hearts by C L Hadyn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

For LGBTQ month I want to highly recommend Guarded Hearts. I didn’t realize how much I enjoyed gay romance—at least CL’s gay romance. I met Marine Sergeant Wren de Lassy in The Danegeld before he joined the marines and this is a continuation of his story. The first day at MARSOC Command he meets Geordy Campbell, his new roommate. Okay, they’re both gay, but neither dates fellow marines. Yet.

These are strong, fully formed characters with their own shadows and past. If you haven’t read gay romance before, this is the perfect one to dip your toe in.

Heaven-Sent Highlander (Warriors in Bronze Book 2)Heaven-Sent Highlander by Nancy Lee Badger
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Heaven-Sent Warriors by Nancy Lee Badger. A paranormal story centered around the Raleigh Museum and the Rodin statues that reside there. This Alexander and Gwendolyn’s story—he’s a Highlander completely out of his time and she’s Fae trying to get past a trauma. As with the first story, a demon has escaped into our world causing Alexander to leave the Rodin statue that houses him in order to save humanity. I really need to make a trip to this museum.

Ms. Badger knows her paranormal and her highlanders and weaves them together well in this series. Keep going, I need to see what happens in #3!

Christmas Revels V: Four Regency NovellasChristmas Revels V: Four Regency Novellas by Hannah Meredith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I had the privilege of reading Christmas Revels V early. Four regency Christmas novellas by Anna D. Allen, Kate Parker, Hannah Meredith and Louisa Cornell. I’m very familiar with and love the works of Ms. Parker and Ms. Meredith, but Ms. Allen and Ms. Cornell were new to me.

I love a good Christmas story and a good mystery/suspense story. I got four of them with this book.

In Mr. Hunt’s Christmas Caller I got a strong woman who learned when to be honest and express her feelings, something that happens too infrequently in novels and real life. In The Christmas Gamble, the mystery of the missing Earl overshadows Christmas and wrecks havoc on Lizzie’s engagement. The Gnome and the Christmas Star is the story of an older couple and proves that love isn’t just for the young.
And A Perfectly Ridiculous Christmas had me laughing out loud. Four totally different but all delightful stories. My highest recs on this one. Don’t miss it!

I’m not normally drawn to Medieval romance, and I had started one that I put down, then I discovered this one my Ms. Meredith. I devoured it and loved it. She has created a universe of two completely different societies that have lived with preconceived notions for generations. The characters are well crafted and complex. You will enjoy this one!

Healing Touch (A Place to Call Home, #1)Healing Touch by Laura Browning
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Laura Browning’s latest is one of her best. When Luke Allred, a widower has moved home to try to heal himself and his devastated children with the help of family and long time friends. He’s unprepared for being a single parent and unable to penetrate the barrier that both children have erected around themselves in their pain.

Rachel Hastings isn’t sure how to feel about her high school crush coming back to town. Her life hasn’t been the easiest but she’s found her place and her peace. Now with Luke back, her life is about to take a major turn.

Ms. Browning has created full and rich characters that you want to know and root for. Don’t miss this one.

Changing Her Tune (Barlow-Barretts Book 5)Changing Her Tune by Laura Browning

I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by Laura Browning, but this couple really caught my attention. They’re about as different as people could be and their meeting is anything but storybook, but they meld whether they want to or not. Her music has always been Pippi’s life and though from a lower middle class family she had achieved Julliard until she was needed to help look after her father. Phillip is used to privilege and power as part of an upper class family. With the election just days away and Pippi’s life in danger their chemistry is put to the test. Check this one out!

Ms. Badger has started a new series – dragon shifters and I’m loving it. The three brothers, the last dragon shifters, are searching for mates knowing that their species is doomed if they can’t find someone.

Evan, the youngest brother, decides to take on the task since his oldest brother is too busy mourning his lost mate. What he knows about humans is nil but if he can get close enough to learn about them without being discovered salvation might be at hand.

When Vika is rescued from the evil Toal by a strange horse, life will never be the same.

BloodstockBloodstock by Cyn Hadyn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ms. Hadyn has done it again. This different take on the vampire “curse” is her latest. I’ve read everything she’s written and each book seems to expand Ms. Hadyn’s abilities. In this book Prince Janos is caught between his honor and his heart. He’s pledged to marry a woman that he not only doesn’t love, but doesn’t even like and the feeling is mutual. The Baroness Beatrix, hired to paint miniatures as a pre-nuptial gift to his fiancée, has taken his heart. His fiancée’s mother is no better, condemning him as a soulless abomination, a revenant or vampire. He cannot reveal the true nature of his being but honor holds him prisoner. My highest recommendations for this and any of Ms. Hadyn’s work – you won’t regret it!

They’re drawn together from the first but both have secrets they want to keep that way. Ms. Badger has hands on experience with their job and it was fascinating to see behind the scenes and the dangers the protectors face in protecting us. Check out this series!

Regency England meets Groundhog Day. I never know what Ms. Ashe is going to come up with but I know I’ll enjoy it. When Calista Holland sees Tacitus Everard again after six years it’s at a near tragedy when he almost runs down her son, the only light in her dismal life since Tacitus left her. But that’s just the beginning to the freakish existence that now surrounds Calista, that she must endure until the goddess thinks she has it right. Come on in, the water’s fine!

Wild Sky (Night Sky, #2)Wild Sky by Suzanne Brockmann
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve grown to really like the characters in the Sky series. I’m not a major YA fan but some people pull me in – Elena Dillon, Sarra Cannon and now Suzanne & Melanie Brockmann. The kids in the Sky series are fully formed characters and yes the angst is there but it doesn’t overwhelm the story. The Greater-Thans, kids with powers above a normal human, are being kidnapped and used to create a drug that makes anyone young and beautiful—for a time, before it kills them violently and everyone else within range of them as they die. Sky and her crew are trying to find and save other GTs but they’re a band of kids up against a well-funded conspiracy. It’s a race and not an even one. I admit I love Calvin. He reminds me of Xander in the Buffy series-the normal one who holds them together though in this book he gets to play more on the main stage. Check out this series, you’ll get hooked too.

This is the second Krewe book and I found it a little hard to keep everyone straight. I Loved a Rogue (The Prince Catchers, #3)I Loved a Rogue by Katharine Ashe
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is Eleanor’s story in the Prince Catcher’s trilogy. Eleanor is the oldest of the sisters and the only one left to marry a prince that will lead the sisters to their birthright. But Eleanor’s heart was taken over years ago by the young, dirty gypsy, Taliesin. Though he’s been gone for years no one else has touched her. Now Taliesin is back, grown, prosperous and even more devastatingly handsome, to celebrate the wedding of their stepfather and once again caught by the beautiful Eleanor that he could never forget. Ms. Ashe can certainly draw you into a story. You can see I read mostly paranormal, but when I take a break I always know where to look.

Shadows Strike (Immortal Guardians, #6)Shadows Strike by Dianne Duvall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I had this one on pre-order and will the next one as well. Ms. Duvall can suck me into a story faster than a vampire can suck blood. My only problem is I read faster than she writes. This is Ethan’s story – he’s been out of luck on the couple scene since Zach showed up and took Lisette by storm.

Heather is a gifted-one with telepathy as her gift along with, suddenly dreams that seem to be precognitive – a new twist. And she’s been seeing Ethan in those dreams for a year. Mix in Aiden and some of the others and you have the perfect mix. My highest recommendation. If you’ve not found the Immortal Guardian series, you’re in for a treat!

I don’t read women’s literature as rule, but I do enjoy Ms. LaPonzina’s. I had to look up bibliotherapy and found out it’s quite an extensive form of therapy of which I was unfamiliar. Rhose Guerin is caught in the middle of a generational gap – looking after her failing mother as her daughter is dealing with a new career and man. And Rhose wants to continue her education to grow herself and possibly move out of a marriage that has gone stale. This is a different kind of coming of age book with a lot of insight, you might learn a lot about yourself. Check it out.

Cassie's OrdealCassie’s Ordeal by PK Corey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This may be my favorite of the Cassie books so far. That would be due to Sue. The ordeal that is the center of this book isn’t just Cassie’s and Sue very plainly puts that out, standing up to Tom and putting him in his place. That’s not something that happens often and I admit I delighted in it. And for a change the fault really isn’t Cassie’s! If you haven’t started this series yet, get on the wagon.

Now he had to go back into the field with a brand new team, including policewoman Angela Hawkins who knows a thing or two about the paranormal herself. This is one of my favorites in the series. We all know that guy – the sniveling, ‘it’s not my fault’ guy that too often gets away with it. And the luck Jerry had in this book seems to follow them around. Eve knows who did it, but knowing who’s next is the problem. The list of potentials is astronomical. It’s always fun to see Roarke’s family show up too, reminding Eve she’s never going to be alone again – marriage rules. If you’re following this series – don’t miss this one.

My Hunted Highlander (Kilted Athletes Through Time Book 3)My Hunted Highlander by Nancy Lee Badger

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I believe this is my favorite of the series. When Niall is rescued by pirates after falling into the sea to escape being captured by his father’s men, he discovers the captain to not only be a woman, but Blair speaks like the strange women he’s heard recently that rumor has it are from the future. Keegan, Blair’s ward looks a little too like him for comfort and his SOB father and laird, Angus are still in the mix. A great series I’m sorry to see ending!

All Wicked's Eve (Deadly Sins Book 6)All Wicked’s Eve by Andris Bear

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ms. Bear picks up the story of Joey Benton on Halloween night, but not like any Halloween you’d ever want to encounter. Plain old monsters would be bad enough but the apocalypse? Angels crashing to ground, rescuers turning to stone—and you leave me with that cliff hanger? If you haven’t gotten hooked on this series yet, now’s the time to get started so we can stalk Ms. Bear together for the next chapter.

The Obituary SocietyThe Obituary Society by Jessica L. Randall

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’m a sucker for old Southern ladies and this was a hoot with some mystery and even a little paranormal thrown in. Though I admit, how these ladies kept a secret for so long is beyond my experience. When Lila Moore inherits her grandfather’s house and comes home she’s in for more than she bargained for, as well as some major matchmaking. A great beach read.

White Tigress (Tigress, #1)White Tigress by Jade Lee

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a new type of historical for me – not set in England and not holding to any of the regency guidelines I’m used to. It reminded me of Cyn Haydn’s Candle on the Beach with that twist to the historical I look for. China during the regency period didn’t seem to have a positive view of the English and the English reciprocated. When a very naïve Lydia Smith makes her solitary way to China to find her fiancée she find a whole lot more. Sold into slavery not as a sex toy, but as a way to find religious ecstasy teaches her a whole new way of thinking. A very clever and new way to look at the period. Enjoy!

Classic Dallas! I could follow this one somewhat easier since I work (in real life) with accounting types. Good fun read. Have to admit, I never realized how stacked Peabody is. Shebody makes a lot more sense now.

No Mercy (Were-Hunter, #5)No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ms. Kenyon has brought together Samia, an Amazon warrior during Darkhunter due to the betrayal of her sister and my favorite bear, Dev Peltier. I’ve been hoping for a Dev story and she did not disappoint. The powers of evil have new weapons and powers that need to be investigated, and Nick may be at the middle of it all. Great next chapter in the series.

When Lightning Strikes (Whiskey Creek, #1)When Lightning Strikes by Brenda Novak

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is my first Whiskey Creek story and I was worried when I first started that I knew the story. But Ms. Novak took it deeper. Simon is the perfectly sexy and gorgeous leading man that no one knows on the inside. Gail is the straight laced career woman about to lose her business because of what she assumes are Simon’s dealings. When they join forces, both learn a lot about the other. A good beach read.

The Way of the WarriorThe Way of the Warrior by Suzanne Brockmann

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Eight authors to give you eight different ways to look at our warriors. My only problem is they are short stories and most I wanted to continue for several hundred more pages. Most of these were new to me, but of course I was very familiar with the characters is Suzanne Brockman’s story. These stories introduced me to new series and authors and I watched my TBR pile teeter with the new additions. Check it out!

A Sorceress of His Own (The Gifted Ones, #1)A Sorceress of His Own by Dianne Duvall

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ms. Duvall has done it again. This time the immortal guardians are merely a dream in Seth’s eye. She has gone back to the beginning introducing the gifted ones. Alyssa has been at Lord Dillon’s side for years though he does not know it. Lord Dillon believes his trusted advisor, the one woman that doesn’t cringe at his reputation as warrior, is the same woman that served his father and grandfather. It takes near disaster for his to discover that woman’s granddaughter is the one that intrigues him so from the shadows. So good to see some old friends from the present show up as well. As always my highest recommendation! Please keep ‘em coming.

Retribution (Dark-Hunter, #10)Retribution by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Darkhunter Sundown Brady was a Wild West gunslinger before his best friend killed him on his wedding day. He knew nothing about Artemis or Greek myths. But he’s in the fight now and has been able to keep up with his former fiancée’s family. But he lost track of Abigail the night her parents were killed. Abigail, orphaned as a kid has been raised to hunt and kill Darkhunters and find her parents’ killer and kill him, has been searching for Brady for a long time. Longer than even they know. (And I love the extra piece with Ash – thanks!)

Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson Moon Called #3Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson Moon Called #3 by Patricia Briggs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mercy is a pretty good mechanic, but also a shape-shifting coyote raised by werewolves. When someone decides to create new werewolves and sell them as mercenaries, they need to take the local alpha out first. When Mercy brings in the vampires to help her find the kidnapped daughter of the alpha, and hooks back up with the pack that raised her she learns the art of walking softly to keep the peace. Think Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris and enjoy!

Special Delivery (Mountain Meadow Homecomings, #1)Special Delivery by Laura Browning

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ms. Browning has given us two great stories in one. In the first Holly and her little brother Tyler must escape her abusive ex before he can get his hands on their unborn child. Then Jake, a police lieutenant returned to his hometown steps in and lets their growing closeness help protect her. In the meantime another returnee Evan is making life miserable for an old girlfriend, Jenny. You know small towns, nothing is kept secret long. You’re going to love this one – pull up some beach and enjoy!

Hearts AsunderHearts Asunder by Cyn Hadyn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the 4th of the Doone Clan series and I love it. Now I must warn you, if you’re new to the series, this is not the please to start. You need to be a complete Doone-ite and know the cast of characters to follow this story, but it is so worth it. Several plots going here, because Ms. Hadyn knows how to twist her plots – someone is trying to assassinate the blue dragon king, a gang of shifters is using Poseidon’s seas for smuggling and then there’s Tix. Go to the beginning and catch up with me quick while we wait for #5 – there will be a #5, right??
*****
EnvyEnvy by Sandra Brown

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ms. Brown certainly knows how to craft a story. The book within a book for Envy was masterful. And she does create a great villain, even when you’re not sure which one is the villain. Noah reminded me of the movie Rope by Hitchcock with his certainty that he deserved wealth, esteem and to win by right. Parker was a more difficult character to decide about. And the twist of who was who at the end was worth the whole book. A must read, sit back.

Bad Moon Rising (Were-Hunter, #4)Bad Moon Rising by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the story of Fang and Aimee, a wolf and a bear that obviously can’t be together – interspecies, remember, but drawn to one another as with no one else. I knew a lot of this story from previous Kenyon works, but I was glad to finally find out what was going on with Fang all those months he was “gone.” He hadn’t seemed the type to disappear into grief regardless of circumstances. Seeing the same story from a different view gave me a lot more insight. And I’ll be continuing this series!

Cassie's InfluenceCassie’s Influence by P.K. Corey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In this, Cassie’s 6th book, she seems to be settling down – no strike that, can’t happen – but she is thoughtful about her relationships, using flashbacks to tell us about the important people in her life. Especially the man who had become like a son to her, Ryan and the young woman they introduced to him, Allie. It’s interesting watching this young couple take their cues from more experienced, if not necessarily “mature” influences. Yes, I’m talking about you, Sue. If you’re into DD, this is the series to read.

A Good Debutante's Guide to Ruin (The Debutante Files, #1)A Good Debutante’s Guide to Ruin by Sophie Jordan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When Rosalie Hughes, is dumped on her stepbrother’s doorstep, literally, humiliated doesn’t begin to describe it. She’s always had a crush on Declan since her mother married his father when she was just a child. Of course he wants nothing to do with her and her mother is off who knows where. In order to get rid of her quickest, Declan solicits the help of his aunt and cousin, lays a huge dowry on her, and makes her the belle of the season. Great if all you’re interested in is the money. Those twinges he feels watching other men, wrong men, fawn over her have nothing to do with jealousy. Ms. Jordan leads you on many twists in this story that adds so much to the characters. Put up your feet and enjoy!

In Still Darkness (Immortal Guardians, #3.5)In Still Darkness by Dianne Duvall

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Richart D Alencon is fairly young as an Immortal Guardian goes, only three hundred or so years, but he’s good at his job. When he rescues Jenna from a vampire attack instead of falling unconscious, she kisses him as a thank you, then collapses. Taken by her, Richart takes her home, tucks her in and leaves, but makes her his special project to keep safe. Before he knows it, they make friends and then begin dating. She’s worried she’s too old for him with a grown son in medical school. This is a short story to bring Richart’s relationship to us and I was delighted to finally get his story. I’ve already caught up with his twin and sister, along with the whole Immortal Guardian gang. I love this series – Ms. Duvall, please keep ‘em coming!

Starting with JuneStarting with June by Emilie Rose

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

June Jones has moved back home. She loves it, but her humiliating reason for returning and her father’s obvious displeasure temper her love of being there. She is, however, the kind of lawman she wants to be. Former Marine Sam Roberts is there for an entirely different reason. He’s recovering from his wounds, but has been told he’ll never have the eyesight to be a sniper again. Which means his career, his future and basically his life is over. Needing time to heal, a former commander offers him a temp job to see how deep the corruption in his small police force goes.

Teamed together by the former commander Sam’s secret reason for being there causes problems, but June still manages to worm her way into his consciousness, and life. I was delighted with this story. The characters were well crafted and I felt like they could walk into my home at any time. And knowing small towns all too well, this could be happening right now at home. This was my first Emilie Rose book – believe me, it won’t be my last!

Now she’s in trouble because of secrets her late husband was so good at keeping and she and the boy are in a run for their lives. Going to Luke wasn’t her first choice, but he might know which secret has become so important people are willing to kill for it.

Luke has his own secrets, ones that have kept him from his family for years in order to protect them. Finding out he has a son has only made him more vulnerable to the people trying to hurt him. This is Paula at her best, several mysteries woven together, fast paced with truly human-flawed characters. Check this one out!

The Look of Love (The Sullivans, #1)The Look of Love by Bella Andre

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Chase Sullivan just happens to be in the right place at the right time to rescue Chloe on the side of the road. He’s on his way to his rich brother’s winery and takes her along since her POS car is damaged and it’s raining. I have to say things happen really fast after that. I believe it’s the pace of the book that troubled me. Chloe is beaten up by her ex, falls into the arms of the next man in less than 48 hours after he’s caught her pleasuring herself in her tub. Dealing with real life waited until the very end of the book. I enjoy Ms. Andre’s writing but I wanted less perfection and more reality in this story.

Nate has told Roxy he’d try to help her on this very personal investigation, but the odds are against them. The perp is too wealthy and well-connected. Roxy isn’t about to let that stop her, regardless of the consequences to herself. Loved that twist at the end. A perfect read for a Sunday afternoon.

When Libby’s father is captured while deployed, the government fears she might become a target of the people holding her father. For I Have Sinned (Charley Davidson, #3.5)For I Have Sinned by Darynda Jones

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a short story from the Charley Davidson world, but told by one of her souls that hasn’t yet realized she was dead. It was interesting watching someone watch Charley with her definitely quirky ways and vocabulary. Fun little story. Note a lot of the file is previews for upcoming books, not a novella.

One Silent Night (Dark-Hunter, #9)One Silent Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Ms. Kenyon didn’t hit this one out of the park for me. Stryker, while an interesting character, didn’t pull me into the story, and I felt like a lot of new characters had been added that I had to scramble to get to know. You really have to have taken notes of the previous history to understand this one. I love this series and will continue, but this one, aside from the alliance of Stryker, Acheron and Nick, felt a little flat.

Ascension (The Demon Hunters, #1)Ascension by A.S. Fenichel

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Lady Belinda Carlisle has changed since her fiancée left for war. Things have happened to her, things not easily explained to a proper Lord like Gabriel Thurston. I do enjoy historical regency with a twist and this one has a twist. Belinda, because of circumstances beyond her control, has become a demon hunter. Gabriel might have come home from the wars expecting his genteel and proper companion, but life as he knew it is over. This is my first Fenichel, but I’ll be back. A great read and definitely different from your “normal” historical romance.

Acheron (Dark-Hunter, #8)Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve been waiting to read this one. I’m trying to go in order, and this one kept pulling at me. The history of Acheron and what he had to endure to become the head of the Dark Hunters with his compassion and insight was a story I wanted to read. It did NOT disappoint! Acheron’s intense desire to keep his past secret came through loud and clear. Eleven thousand years is not enough to erase the memories of his mortal life and the degradation and torture it held. Then enter Dr. Soteria Kafieri. Tori isn’t going to let a little thing like his secrets get in her way of learning more about this man. And Acheron is more than a little intrigued that she can withstand the sexual pull he has on the rest of the human population. I’m glad I waited, because I knew the world Ms. Kenyon has built, and this was worth the wait.

Captive BrideCaptive Bride by Katharine Ashe

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another historical with a twist. Ms. Ashe always delights me with her thought processes. Beatrice Sinclaire has turned down the offer of marriage to Lord Peter Cheriot more times than she can count. It’s not that she doesn’t love him, but cannot believe that he might have true feelings for her. Beatrice is called upon to save her twin brother once again, and Peter offers to accompany her on the trip – well chaperoned of course. When they find themselves literally trapped in a castle by an ancient curse, it’s time to be honest with one another. Put your feet up and enjoy.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Abigail is a strong and talented woman, but she made a mistake, a serious one, and her reputation could be destroyed forever. Captain Jack, now Viscount Ardmore, and new to the title, due to the death of his father, only wants his home back, and the ability to give his mother her last wish. When their lives collide, is it the beginning of a reprieve for both of them, or are they going to be dragged into the mistakes of their parents? Ms. Gayle has given me the historical I’ve been waiting for. Yes, women in that age were mere property, but I suspect most of them were stronger than they could ever let on. Abigail is one of those women. She doesn’t back down, against society or even against an evil she’s unaware is stalking her. A must read!!

Aiden, world-renowned actor and winner of eight Oscars is alone. It’s not really his choice, he’s    just tired of being screwed by everyone he trusts. The best way to stop that from happening is to  get away for everyone. But one person hates him above all others, his brother. And he’s summoned a demon to kill him. When the goddess Leta realizes that Dolor is out and ready to kill again, she steps back into the battle to save Aiden. Not my favorite of Ms. Kenyon’s. It felt rushed to me and I’m sorry, but Aiden might be as pure as depicted but really? Moving on to Dream Chaser.

Devil May Cry (Dark-Hunter, #7)Devil May Cry by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Ms. Kenyon has created such a vast and incredible universe. This book (#11 in the Dark Hunter series) introduces Sin – not that kind – an ancient Sumerian God who was stripped of his power by that heifer goddess, Artemis. No wonder she’s so universally hated in this series. Enter Kat, sent by Artemis to destroy Sin, who’s up to something. Okay – not to give any spoilers means stopping here because there’s tons of stuff we learn about this universe in this book. Don’t miss it!

She’s opened her own shop and is making a legal living for herself. But the black knights of Sable haven’t forgotten her. When Miridan of the Sable Knights shows up, she has no reason to trust him. How to Entice an Earl (Ugly Ducklings, #3)How to Entice an Earl by Manda Collins

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Of course I come into the series on book three – and there are things I need to find out from the previous two, but I got into the story fairly quickly. Maddie is close to being “on the shelf” and not necessarily unhappy about it. She wants her independence and the opportunity to write novels. Christian has known her for years and seemed to be only mildly aware of her until very recently. Now he moves forward as her knight in shining armor, if she’d wanted one. I found the sexual tension and the independence she displays in this book slightly ahead of its time for an historical, but I did enjoy the story.

Heir of Autumn (Heartstone Trilogy, #1)Heir of Autumn by Giles Carwyn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Talk about world building. These two authors have created such a rich and diverse world. I had to read a couple of chapters to get my feet under me, but even then I had to know more and where they were going. This does not read like a debut novel. Giles Carwyn and Todd Fahnestock have created a fascinating society. Brophy, son of the Brother of Autumn, is the focus of this first book in the series. He is coming of age in a stressful time, betrayed by his aunt’s foreign-born husband who has usurped his father’s place, cast out of his home, and forced into a deadly game to save his life and his home. Swords, sex magic, a sleeping child – you need to check this out.

When Jacob Oliver starts on his hike up the mountain with that bad leg, I knew there are problems ahead. Of course spotting the beautiful nude swimmer is a plus but still you can feel the problems coming. And when the beautiful nude swimmer turns out to be his rescuer, Destiny Blake takes on a larger presence is Jacob’s life – whether he wants it or not.

This is a thriller, there are several men after Destiny with thoughts of lust and possession and you don’t know who until the end. I like not being able to figure out who, and I admit I had to get under the blankets to read parts, because you could feel the cold and the fear as Ms. Badger wrote it. You don’t have to wait for the heat of the beach sun, but keep an afghan nearby, and sit back to enjoy!

Ladies' ManLadies’ Man by Suzanne Brockmann

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I liked Ellen from the first sentence – she knew she’d made a mistake leaving the house without a book – my kind of woman, but in this case it certainly leads to good things. Sam is pretending to be his best friend TS and that kicks the story off well, with mistaken identities that lead to a twist I didn’t see ahead of time. This is a pure romantic suspense with one of Ms. Brockman’s incredible and humanly flawed heroes. Put your feet up and enjoy.

Charley’s back and as irreverent as ever. Holding Reyes off (it’s a yes or no question), getting Cookie with Ubie, worrying about Dad, and finally wondering about Mr. Wong. BTW I love the new bedroom. It was a busy book with a lot of subplots which would be spoiler-y to get into, but it makes me want to hurl myself into the next book now. Jenny Morgan a 21st century professional woman has managed to return from 1603 to her veterinarian practice, but Gavin Sinclair, acting laird of Clan Sinclair has followed her to ensure her safety from his murderous father, not because he’s fallen in love with her. At least not that he’s admitting. Great series if you’re into tartan!

A Bride for the Season (Love's Grace, #3)A Bride for the Season by Jennifer Delamere

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As this was my first ‘inspirational’ I wasn’t sure what to expect. But what I got was a lot of fun and a very sweet story. Of course I come in on the 3rd book in the trilogy, but that didn’t hamper my enjoyment at all. Lucinda is very nearly on the shelf and pleased about it. She’s a strong, independent woman constrained by her time and conventions. A husband will only hamper her ambitions more. James is the rogue her sister Emily has set her cap on, but he’s just having a good time. Until Emily moves things in an unforeseen direction. When Lucinda tries to rescue the situation everything spirals out of hand, and James begins to realize he may have made the wrong decision. Throw in three sets of parents determined to see their children wed and…well, a wonderful read during your Christmas holidays!

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you follow my reviews you know I love strong women. Well, Maya Rodale has written one of the best characters I’ve read in a long time. Prude Prudence has lived through an ordeal that cripples a lot of women and yes she was damaged but managed to persevere. Then she meets John Castleton and he is really there for her, protecting her when she has long since given up on anyone coming to her aid. His guilt at not sharing his secrets when she finally has the courage to share hers and fight back is a wonderful read. Don’t miss it.

Darynda Jones knows how to make me happy. Just give Charley free rein and stand back. Charley is still learning what she can do and without an instruction book, it’s usually by accident or extreme urgency. But that’s Charley. She finds herself surrounded by women in this story, both alive at the bar and not so at home. Between jealous old friends and new scrutiny by the police, she’s gonna take you for a ride. And that ending…Enjoy!

A Taste for Scandal (Sealed With a Kiss, #2)A Taste for Scandal by Erin Knightley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love Erin Knightley’s books and I trust her, but I did not see this one working out. I love a twist and this story delivered. Richard Moore, Earl of Raleigh was pretty much a good time party boy in my eyes, while Jane Bunting is hard working, serious and down to earth. Not an immediate perfect pair. But Ms. Knightly weaves an impressive story that showed me again what a great writer she is. Highest recommendation, and have a package of your favorite cookies near at hand.

Kiss of the Night (Dark-Hunter, #4)Kiss of the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Viking Dark Hunter Wulf Tryggvason takes center stage in this book. Remember him from Talon’s story? No one else does and that’s part of his problem. No one can remember him, until he meets Cassandra Peters, part Apollite and thus an automatic hated enemy. Wouldn’t you know? But he’s given the task of protecting her from none other than Acheron himself, so what’s a Dark Hunter to do? Those guys need someone in their lives–haven’t we proven that? Nice to see Talon, Kyrian and Zarek again. Really enjoying this series.

Do or Die (Reluctant Heroes, #1)Do or Die by Suzanne Brockmann

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Suzanne Brockman never disappoints me. These were mostly new characters, hi to Deb and Yashi, but Ian Dunn fits nicely into the group of Seals I’ve come to know and love from Ms. Brockman. Phoebe Kruger grew on me as the story progressed. Personally, I liked all the subplots as well and wouldn’t mind spending some more time with these guys. Brockman is an auto-buy for me!

Seven Wicked Nights (Turner, #1.5; Fitzhugh Trilogy, #0.5; Nottinghamshire, #2; All's Fair in Love, #1)Seven Wicked Nights by Courtney Milan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I needed something that wasn’t heavy warrior paranormal and lucked into this set of short stories. I’m very familiar with Erin Knightly and Tessa Dare and love them, but was less familiar with the others. I enjoyed all the stories, I think my favorite new one was One Starlit Night by Carolyn Jewel –it was different and I was surprised by the twist. A lot of fun reads.

Night Unbound (Immortal Guardians, #5)Night Unbound by Dianne Duvall

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book 5 in the Unbound series by Dianne Duvall is near the top of the series for me. Ms. Duvall likes her vampire attacks on North Carolina campuses and this one was definitely centered around UNCG (which explains a lot actually). Lisette d’Alençon’s story revolves around Zach, a loner. Not one of the Immortal Guardians, Zach is something else, something more and unwelcome around Seth and his family of unsung heroes. But Lisette feels differently about this brooding warrior and hides her attraction even from the all-knowing Seth until it’s almost too late. Great book and great series – check it out!

A Perfect Mess (A Perfect Secret Series, #1)A Perfect Mess by Zoe Dawson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Thoroughly enjoyed Aubree and Booker. Aubree wants to be perfect and is willing to sacrifice a lot to be just that. Booker is one of the unholy Outlaw triplets (and I do feel for these guys’ mother). I was a little surprised at what these people had accomplished one year out of high school, but it’s fiction and a lot of fun. Gonna have to follow Zoe on to the next one and see what she’s up to there. Fun read.

The Millionaire's Proposal: Destined For Love SeriesThe Millionaire’s Proposal: Destined For Love Series by Janelle Denison

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ford McCabe was the bad boy in town and every knew it. Grace Holbrook’s upbringing is the total opposite. Yes, I’ve read this story line before but Janelle does a good job with these characters. They still aren’t perfect and she let’s them be themselves as they learn to come together. A good beach read.

Dance with the Devil (Dark-Hunter, #3)Dance with the Devil by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is book three in the Dark Hunters series and I believe my favorite so far. Zarek is a wounded man in every way. The fact that he’s immortal and without anyone to count on makes for a long and lonely light. He’s been condemned to death by Artemis because of transgressions that may or may not be his fault. Astrid, sister of the Fates has been given the task of judging him to determine if he should be condemned or not. Fortunately she wants the job done right and doesn’t allow him to push her away as he has everyone else. When an even stronger foe from his past emerges, he finds himself willing to fight for someone else and maybe find a reason to live. Zarek is such a lonely soul and I feel for everything he has gone through and believes about himself. Sherrilyn Kenyon has drawn a very real character you’ll want to know.

The Seduction of EstherThe Seduction of Esther by Jennifer Wilck

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Samara is a Klutz with a capital K and voice like an angel. It’s only when she’s performing that the rest of her relaxes. But she’s used to making a fool of herself (in her mind) and accepts it when she meets Nathaniel the new guy at the temple. He’s divorced with a daughter and pretty reticent to talk about himself. He doesn’t want to be the center of gossip or interest. So of course the person who seems to bring attention to herself (wanted or not) is attracted and vice versa with the person who wants the least attention. They get to know one another around the play that Samara has written for the Purim holiday and learn their roles can lead them to a new discovery. In addition to enjoying a great romance, I learned about a Jewish tradition that was new for me. I’m looking forward to more from Jennifer Wilck.

shimmershimmer by Elena Dillon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Elena’s done it again. She knows her YA and writes it beautifully. Chandler and her father are on the run, we just don’t know what from and it has to be deadly. Years of lies and living without real friends or roots have taken their tool on a young woman who needs some stability. She just has forgotten how deadly such a thing can be. And I was so happy to see Caeden again all grown up (and swoon worthy), from Breathe, the first in this series. Please keep it coming, Elena!

The Book of Life (All Souls Trilogy, #3)The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve been waiting for this one. Discovery of Witches is one of my favorite books. The second one was good, but this one is back up to the excellence of the first. Diana Bishop, a witch and Matthew Clairmont, a vampire have fallen in love and married, but that’s only the beginning (see book 1). They’ve been on the search for a cure for Matthew’s blood rage and the Book of Life, as well as answers to Diana’s now emerging powers. Deborah Harkness has woven all the creatures, witches, vampires, demons and humans together in a delicious story that you should read. Start at the beginning!

Night Embrace (Dark-Hunter, #2)Night Embrace by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is Book 2 of the Dark Hunter series and brings Talon of the Morrigantes, the hermit in the swamp, into the light. When Sunshine Runningwolf saves him from a runaway Mardi Gras float, you know there’s trouble ahead. And why does she bring back memories he’d rather not have? I enjoyed finding out the link between these two (no spoilers) and some more background on the enigmatic Ash. I need more of this series. Sherilynn Kenyon knows her way around creatures.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Skylar has been moved, against her will, to the land of the living dead, Florida – average age of neighbors, 75. And she’s not sure why – neither are we yet. This is a prequel to the new series co-written by Suzanne Brockman and her daughter, Melanie. I’m already invested in the characters and looking forward to finding out a lot more about what’s going on in Skylar’s life, because there’s a lot going on. Melanie has an incredible mentor, can’t wait to see where she goes as well.

The Survivors (The Survivors, #1)The Survivors by Amanda Havard

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have read quite a bit of YA in the last few years, a lot of it incredibly good, though I didn’t realize that’s what this was going in. I’m glad the genre exists, but I wanted more from this one. Sadie is over a hundred years old and has read everything she can get her hands on from the outside world, even lived there for a couple of years, but still seems to have the angst of a teenager in high school. I would have loved to hear more about the Salem witch trials, that intro into the book was incredible but I wanted more insight on her part after all those years.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Chamos is destined to die continually at the hands of Satan. The problem is she won’t let him die for real. The constant coming back for more wore thin a long time ago. When he finds an escape, even though he’s sure it’s temporary he finds himself with Shula. She may be the focus of something he overheard in Hell, a possible shaman and friend of his enemy, who happens to be an Archangel and his wife, an Electus. The problem is she remembers him from a previous encounter that didn’t go so well. Trying to protect Shula, stay hidden from Satan and avoid the Archangel’s fists may be more than he can handle. Written in My Own Heart's Blood (Outlander, #8)Written in My Own Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How do I do this without spoilers – is there anyone out there left to be spoiled? I’ve waited years for this book, apparently I read faster than Diana writes and that’s my biggest problem with this book – there’s not another one to plow into. So I can go back to the beginning and do it all again (and watch it on TV) and I will. I love that Jamie and Claire are getting older and are still together, still love each other, still want each other. It’s not all hard muscles and heaving breasts in these books and that may be the best part of all for me. Yes, I remember sweet virgin Jamie from the first book but I feel like I’ve grown older with them and love them more because of it. Come on Diana, I’m ready!

Night Pleasures (Dark-Hunter, #1)Night Pleasures by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When Amanda wakes up handcuffed to the “buff stud in black leather” I know I’ve found a book I want to read. It doesn’t matter than the person supposed to have been kidnapped was her twin, Tabitha. Kyrian, said buff stud, is actually an immortal and former crown prince of Thrace who became a Dark Hunter to get revenge on his former wife. He’s been fine without a woman in his life, not to mention it’s forbidden anyway, until Amanda. And she’s certainly not interested, having just had her engagement broken by her fiancé. But they are kinda stuck together for a while and he’s not all bad for a kind of vampire. But she needs to get him to trust her and that’s not an easy path for him. Put your feet up and love it – It is Sherrilyn Kenyon.

A Rogue by Any Other Name (The Rules of Scoundrels, #1)A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah MacLean

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Penelope is on the brink of becoming a spinster due to a previous engagement going south and she’s not willing to settle for someone she doesn’t care for. She wants the big love and adventure, “more”.
Michael lost everything on one turn of the card and even though he’s made the money back with plenty to spare, he’s bitter over the “friend” that took him and has vowed his revenge. When his property comes back “on the market” through Penelope’s dowry he jumps at the chance. No matter that he and Penelope were childhood friends and she has always been a little in love with him, he goes into the marriage with only the property on this mind.
What he doesn’t expect is to develop feelings for his old and only friend. I enjoyed this story. I always lean toward strong women and Penelope has had to be that following her scandal and taking on the burden of her sisters being unable to find good matches due to her scandal. Sometimes I wanted to smack Michael for being obtuse, but I feel that way a lot – LOL. Enjoy!

The DanegeldThe Danegeld by Cyn Haydn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Cyn Haydn’s latest is different. Ross de Lassy is former spec ops and very good at finding things. He’s left the military and opened his own private investigation firm, but he’s alone.

Nels Kirkegaard is the heir to the family furniture business in Denmark but is taking a year off the find himself before taking the helm from his deceased grandfather. These two men meet and click over the renovation of Ross’s new combined home and business building.

When Nels turns up missing, Ross’s abilities are brought into urgent play to try to retrieve Nels from certain torture – and maybe their relationship will grow because of it. I don’t read much M/M fiction, Ms. Haydn and Suzanne Brockman pretty much cover it, but I’m certainly enjoying what they write. Check it out.

My Lady Highlander (Kilted Athletes Through Time, #1)My Lady Highlander by Nancy Lee Badger

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nancy’s time-traveling Highlander series continues with My Lady Highlander and I was delighted to see Bull again. He’s been one of my favorites from previous books so I was glad he got his own finally. Bull is a reluctant Highlander at best and keeps telling people he’s not one, but actions speak louder than words.
Izzy is one of those strong women I love, and she has powers that are developing. She’s lived in the future for a while, but now she’s back in Scotland in her time and Bull’s along for the ride whether he wants to be or not. This is a fun series – you should check it out.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is not exactly a Troubleshooters book, but that said it is about the series. My first thought was I wanted a full story, but then I started reading it and I have to say it made these guys (and women) become even more alive for me. When they are talking to Suzanne (or talking about her before she gets there) they are real people to me. Okay, they already were, but this adds to the depth. I’d know them if they walked into my office (Please!!) I did laugh out loud at some of the interviews.

A Path Through the Garden is the sequel to Nardi Point and takes up the story of Leyla-Jo and Hal. The story picks up several years after the archeology discovery that brings this group together, and finds Leyla-Jo struggling with infertility while Hal becomes embroiled in an international conspiracy against his work. I wasn’t expecting a mystery but it was there. I really felt for Leyla-Jo and the many set-backs in her journey. But she does not flinch – you’ll enjoy this intriguing sequel.

Enter John “The Wall” Kowalsky to rescue her from a huge mistake and plunge her into a the possible next one. I admit I laughed out loud at parts which always delights me. Dying for a LivingDying for a Living by Kory M. Shrum

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Okay, this is a new premise for me and since I love paranormal, it fits in so nicely in my library. Jesse is just your average everyday Necronite, right? Someone who gets paid to die for you. When the story opens she’s only on her 67th death, nothing new. Until she finds someone wanting to kill her for real and ever. I was delighted to realize this is a series because I have a lot of questions about Lane and Ally. Reminds me a little of Darynda Jones – enjoy!

Katherine Ashe’s latest is incredible. This was not your normal historical romance and you have to pay attention in a whole new way which delighted me. I’m afraid anything I say would be a spoiler but suffice it to say you need to follow along carefully in the story of Cora and Ian. These are fascinating layered characters on their own, but what Katherine does to them . . . Trust me, if you read historical, you need to check this one out.

I love paranormal – the author can create the world and the rules and you can sit back and enjoy and Jane Wakely has done that here. I do feel sorry for Sadie, of course she has no self-confidence with Noah controlling things of which she’s completely unaware. Men! Even if they are shapeshifters, they’re still the same. I’m anxious to learn more about this Council, the governing body of the Mythical Realm and all the ins and outs of the universe Jane has created. Put your feet up and enjoy!

The setting was nearly retro without his computers and smart phones. They’ve always been great anchors and the go-to people for the Breed warriors. My only complaint is I want more, but then I always do with Lara. Sit back and enjoy!

I was glad to get back to Alex and Edwina – this is a different story from your “regular” historical novel. For one thing it’s placed in Brazil and he’s half Japanese, half Brazilian. Edwina is from New England but has learned the hard way to hold her own in business if not with her heart. I knew Ms. Hadyn could write paranormal, but she blew me away with her historical. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!

This is not a light read. It’s a gritty, real story of addiction and what it does to the person, the family and the friends. The book was raw in places, but it’ a story that needs to get out there. Miranda, Declan and Susan are caught in a destructive loop and none of them know how to fight their way out of it. Lindsay has the experience to help – if they can see how badly then need it. Go ahead and read, you’ll learn something about yourself as well.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Denisea has done it again and I have a new favorite of hers. I like mature couples, people who had lived together and know one another, people that have grown together and are willing to keep trying even when a relationship is hard. This book hit all those marks. Gavin and Ray have been married all of Gavin’s military career. That hasn’t made it any easier for her or the family they’ve grown. It’s time for both of them to see what that military career has shaped within their family. A perfect read for Memorial Day.

Jesse's GirlJesse’s Girl by Char Chaffin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ms. Chaffin has done it again. She gets inside of the heads of her characters and you know how they feel. She brought me right back to small town living (and reminded me why I left!) Jesse, the saint of Skitter Lake isn’t what everyone remembers, or wants to, and Tim the boy from the wrong side of the tracks can’t compete with that. Trying to clear his name, Tim runs up against old prejudice and memories so engrained as to be gospel. Only a few are willing to listen, much less believe, but how can he leave Dorothy again. Thank you, Char for an excellent read. You’ll enjoy it.

When Dylan comes to her rescue she’s not impressed. He’s the black sheep to her princess and neither thinks much of the other. He’s come back from war wounded and just as pissed off. It’s no wonder they end up serving community service together. And get to know one another as no one else has. These characters were full and real and I understood them. You’ll enjoy this one.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Okay, I came in at the middle, but it took no time to realize I want more of this series. Caroline’s a non-shifter in a shifter world and she’s learned to look after herself and the shifters around her. She’s on her own now that her wolf part-time mate has sniffed out his forever mate and she’s looking around. The problem is, there’s a bear council summit meeting in town and one of the alpha bears has caught her eye and vice versa. Tyler is that bear and he’s not interested in a long-term relationship, he thought.
I laughed out loud at parts. Yes, more of the Takhini Wolves series is in my future.

Allegiant (Divergent, #3)Allegiant by Veronica Roth

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Third of the Divergent series and not my favorite. In the two previous books we saw the action from Tris’ point of view. In this last book, she moved back and forth between Tris and Tobias. The problem was I didn’t always know which POV I was in. More than once I had to go back to the chapter heading to figure out who I was reading. That kept taking me out of the story. Also, I considered this to be a romance, even though it’s YA. One of the hard and fast rules for romance, as I understand them are a happily ever after or happily for now ending… I did enjoy the first two in the series.

I’ve followed Cyn’s Aurelia series and love it. I’m used to her supernatural work, so I’m delighted to find out she also writes historical. Edwina Webb has inherited her father’s shipping business, but in the 19th century, that’s not necessarily an easy thing. Her deception to keep her newest client, Alexandre Marshall in the dark works to both her advantage and disadvantage. I’m unfamiliar with the history of Brazil but Cyn makes it come alive. Highest recommendations for this newest series.

The second book in the Divergent series. I wanted to like this one more than I did, but it felt like the book you had to get through to get to the next part. I know something is coming but we’re not there yet. I did appreciate learning more about Four’s background but maybe I’m too old to get into Tris’ point of view and angst. I’m going to finish the series, and hope the third book brings me back to where the first one took me.

My daughter led me to this one. I’d heard about it, but wasn’t sure I wanted another YA trilogy. I’m glad I read it now – it’s more Hunger Games, thank goodness than Twilight. Tris is one confused young girl, not surprising with the rigid society she’s in. Her drastic change from one segment of society to it’s opposite is a little jarring but it works. Four is the character I’m drawn to and I want to learn more about his background in the next book. Yes, I’m going to read them all now. Veronica hooked me.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a YA book about Jax, a young witch who wants to escape her coven (i.e. father) and runs to the mountains of North Carolina to hide. So of course the first guy she runs into is a hunter, Keller. I’ve never thought of witches as evil so her coven caught me off guard – a twist I wasn’t expecting and I enjoyed that. A lot of teenage angst, but that’s what so many YA books are about. The world Trish Milburn has created had a lot of intriguing areas and I plan to follow Jax on to the next book.

I couldn’t let the season go without a Christmas regency and this one hit all the marks. Finn is attending a friend’s wedding and hardly in the mood to be reminded of Cece, the young girl who had caused him so much embarrassment with a stolen, and very public kiss, years ago. He’d given no thought to her embarrassment. Cece never expected Finn to be at the wedding. She’s lived with her public humiliation and the jokes for so long she’s almost convinced herself she cares nothing for Finn any longer. Until they see each other. A wonderful Christmas story. Indulge yourself!

I’m a science fiction ho and this fed right into my loves. Humans have spread out through the universe after destroying our planet ecologically. This was a new storyline for me, and frightening. I’ve read about cloning but to juxtapose this use for clones with a super religious colony was genius. It hit all the right notes with me and I want to read more adventures of Jonathan Harkon, his ship Mary Rose and of course his “cat”. If you read sci fi, you’ll enjoy this one!

Okay this one is in a slightly different genre for me. I’m considered a ‘vanilla’ but it did not decrease my pleasure at this book. Cassie and Tom have been married a long time and have that steadiness in their relationship you often miss with younger couples. She’s more than a little spicy and he’s what she needs to ground her. I might not agree with everything, but it works for them and I think you’ll get a kick out of it (her!) too. Enjoy!

Steve King can still do it for me. I’ve been following him longer than I’ve been married and he just keeps getting better. He’s mellowed a little from when I began reading him (under the covers with the lights on) and I appreciate it – these characters are well developed and real. The story of one young man’s summer job in a very different environment felt nostalgic to me. Never miss an opportunity to learn something new and maybe help someone along the way. Read it, you’ll like it.

From There to HereFrom There to Here by Michael Tobias

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had the privilege of reading this book prior to its release. Tobias is a new author but his voice is clear and strong. I read for pleasure (as you can tell) but this book also made me think. I don’t know how to categorize this book – philosophy, religion, even coming of age – maybe all three, but it does give you pause and a new slant on those areas.

Stand-in GroomStand-in Groom by Suzanne Brockmann

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve read all of Suzanne’s Troubleshooters and I’ve caught up on her new Reluctant Heroes, so I’m going back to get my fix now. When Johnny helps rescue Chelsea from muggers he had no idea what he’d gotten himself into. She’s the practical, all business, no romance one and he can handle that – for a while. Sit back and enjoy a really fun romance.

What a time to pick up this book – I really didn’t realize when I did it. 50 Years ago today I was sitting between Chipper and Hoss, holding hands as our teacher cried and the principal’s voice broke over the intercom. It was my Pearl Harbor, my kid’s 9/11. This book took me where I never thought of going. Of course it is excellent – it is Stephen King – but it’s more than that. The research alone is incredible (which Mr. King acknowledged) and I understand I owe thanks to Joe for the ending. Yes, you should read this book.

Young Mutants in LoveYoung Mutants in Love by William D. Dickerson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well this one was different. You might know I started reading comic books at the ripe old age of six and still love them. This book took me back there with a tongue in cheek heroic duo. With problems. Anything I say here is a spoiler but believe me, these two have issues to work out. Cacy and Gavin are just two regular young people, barely aware of one another, until a night of star gazing changes everything. Enter super heroes with no instruction book – Karis and the Diz. Sit back, tighten your seatbelt and enjoy!

Darkness Rises (Immortal Guardians, #4)Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh I was hoping Etienne would get his own book. I’ve wanted to know more about him from the beginning. As one of the younger immortals (only a few hundred years) he’s almost still learning. He finds himself attracted to a free-lance vampire slayer who has stayed under the radar of the Guardians for years. Krysta and her brother know nothing about the Guardians either, so there’s a pretty steep learning curve ahead. This is one of my favorite series ever. Dianne, what about Seth’s cousin – please don’t leave me here for long . . .

Keeper of the Dawn (The Keepers: L.A., #4)Keeper of the Dawn by Heather Graham

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well I came in in the middle of this series, so I’ve got a lot more reading to do. Alessande, an Elven is more than annoyed when Mark, a hunky vampire cop rescues her. So what if she needed the help. That was my introduction to this series by Heather – gotta go back to the beginning. When human sacrifices are being held at the tomb of shape-shifting magician, Alessande has to help – a friend is missing and Alessande is sure she’s in trouble. Boy, does she have no idea. Heather at her finest! Don’t miss it.

Black Lion's Bride (Warrior, #2)Black Lion’s Bride by Tina St. John

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Didn’t know where this story was going and I didn’t like the heroine, which usually stops me in my tracks, but I know Lara (or Tina) so I kept going and she did it again. This is the second book in the Warrior Trilogy. Zahirah, daughter of the master assassin out to murder Richard the Lion Hearted has more secrets than even she knows. Sebastian, a knight who followed Richard on the Crusades, is nearly killed by a secret assassin and during his recovery he meets the mysterious Zahirah. Definitely not a typical romance – try it!

Phantom Shadows (Immortal Guardians, #3)Phantom Shadows by Dianne Duvall

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bastien’s story – I can’t blame Melanie Lipton for falling for the epitome of the bad guy. Maybe he’s misunderstood, but he certainly isn’t trying to make friends. Well, he did create a vampire army and fight against the immortal guardians before he found out the truth about himself. He’s not used to having anyone on his side and Melanie has somehow gotten there. And he’s more than willing to fight even more guardians to fix it so that she stays there. I love this series.

Heat of the Night (Dream Guardians, #2)Heat of the Night by Sylvia Day

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The second in the Dream Guardian’s series by Sylvia Day – I’m not surprised Conor followed his best friend into the real world. Aidan needs his help. It’s the description Stacey gives of Conor when she finds him on the doorstep that reeled me in – wounded Viking. I’m never gonna be able to resist that. Stacey has issues, and being attracted to her Viking doesn’t make it easy. Again, over 18 material, but the series has me hooked. Enjoy!

White Lion's Lady (Warrior, #1)White Lion’s Lady by Tina St. John

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Griffin of Droghallow has grown up bitter, not at all the handsome knight that Isabel de Lamere has dreamed of all these years. They don’t even recognize each other when he abducts her on the way to her wedding on the orders of his foster brother. I do enjoy the stories of this era – Richard the Lionhearted and his court. This is the first in the box set – The Warrior Trilogy. I’ve heard Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series – this a great look into another side of the author.

Pleasures of the Night (Dream Guardians, #1)Pleasures of the Night by Sylvia Day

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nightmares are real and the Guardians are here to protect us. They’re immortal and wage the good fight, but Captain Aidan Cross has become tired and disillusioned. Until he is assigned to Lyssa Bates’ dream. She’s different and may hold the answers that Aidan now knows have been kept from the Guardians. Lyssa is finally able to dream and finds Aidan there and HOT. This is graphic, so under 18, stay away, but the rest of us . . .

Great North RoadGreat North Road by Peter F. Hamilton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is classic science fiction – and complicated! For most of the book the two main stories are separated but Peter weaves them together, merging characters you had no idea were related and it works. When a North clone is murdered exactly as another North clone was murdered twenty years previously people realize it’s more than coincidence but it is a corporate war or an invasion? You’ll wonder all the way through. If you enjoy sci fi, chose this one.

Ice Cold (T-FLAC #17)Ice Cold by Cherry Adair

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ice was melting! Come on, it had to with the heat between Honey and Rafael. From their first fight – I’m talking real physical fight – to their battle of dominance, to working together to save the people she cares about, they were warming up all the way. I’m not just talking about the cigarette I wanted after they were together. Honey is a strong woman and hidden behind a wall of protection she built up since childhood, Rafael does his own hiding behind his reputation as Spanish Stallion (yeah…) but neither seems able to hide from the other. Cherry at her best with T-FLAC. Don’t miss this one.

CrushingCrushing by Elena Dillon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I rarely stay up late to finish a book (I have rules!) but I stayed up last night and I had not figured it out. I love that in a book. Elena has done it again with her second YA. Rory is torn between two guys – her old crush, Gage and her best friend, Dominic but there’s other problems, bigger ones, around. I admit I’ve forgotten a lot of the angst of this age, when everything was the end of the world, but Elena taps into it seamlessly and you do remember. Dive in and enjoy!

Fundamental ProblemsFundamental Problems by Michael J. Tobias

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a collection of short stories – not something I usually read because I love to really get into the characters of a book. Michael knows how to do this quickly. The stories bordered on sci fi and every one was incredibly written. Michael’s prose had me sucked in from the beginning. I would very much like to be able to write like that when I grow up. Highest recommendation and I can’t wait for that novel! Check it out.

This Strange and Familiar Place (So Close to You, #2)This Strange and Familiar Place by Rachel Carter

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I don’t read a lot of YA, but I make an exception for Rachel Carter and Elena Dillon. This is the second book of The Montauk Project and falls right into place. Lydia has changed the past and now 2012 is wrong and unfamiliar. She’s confused and alone and doesn’t know if she can trust Wes. As she learns more about the project she can only grow more concerned. She learns more about Wes’s past but it certainly doesn’t make things clearer for her. I’m caught up in this story – I need #3.

The Goliath StoneThe Goliath Stone by Larry Niven

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Larry Niven has done it again – the man that brought you The Mote in God’s Eye, Lucifer’s Hammer and The Legacy of Heorot is back. I’m unfamiliar with Matthew Joseph Harrington but I envy him getting the chance to write with Niven. As usual the science leaves me a little behind (okay more than a little), but the characters make up for it. They are full and rich and fun to be around. I have to wonder why this man is not in charge of our space exploration – really! If you read hard science fiction – don’t miss this one!

The Sinner (Return of the Highlanders #2)The Sinner by Margaret Mallory

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Two such headstrong characters – you knew they had to clash. Glynis never wants to remarry and you can’t blame her after that first oaf (I loved how she “divorced” him). Alex is too busy “sinning” to think about settling down with only one woman. But circumstances throw them together and who could resist that golden Viking. Alex has been warned – three women – danger, deceit and desire. If you read Highlanders, you’ll enjoy this one!

My Reluctant Highlander (Highland Games Through Time, #3)My Reluctant Highlander by Nancy Lee Badger

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Okay, I only have one problem with this book – it’s the last one in the series. I have enjoyed these characters. Skye and Jake have taken the longest to get together – centuries, but hey, it’s time travel. I do so love having someone from the past witness the miracles of our time. But Skye has made so many mistakes in her attempts to save her family from Andreas Borthwick, now it’s time to grow up and admit the mutual attraction between Skye and Jake and help each other to save the ones they love. It’s a great series and Nancy, come on one more???

Night Reigns (Immortal Guardians, #2)Night Reigns by Dianne Duvall

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dianne did it again. Night Reigns is the second in the Immortal Guardian series and has me clamoring for book three. This book revolves around Marcus and Ami. We met Marcus in the first book – a “friend” of Roland’s if anyone could be and a loner from way back, nursing a broken heart over his lost Bethany. He neither wants nor needs a second to aid him. Yeah, right. Enter Ami, a mysterious woman rescued in Darkness Dawns. We learn about her and what she has endured as we fall in love with the two of them falling in love. Cuddle in and enjoy!

Alien, MineAlien, Mine by Sandra Harris

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It was amazing. I’ve been reading a lot of romance – all genres – but this took me back to my roots and all time favorite – Science Fiction with romance. It doesn’t get any better. When human Sandrea is rescued from the Bluthen by General Mhartak it sets in motion all kinds of interactions with species unfamiliar. Sandra Harris weaves a complex group of military, civilian and utterly clueless “people” that can’t understand body language, or understand the inner workings of an alien society. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The Night Is Watching (Krewe of Hunters, #9)The Night Is Watching by Heather Graham

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Heather has me entranced. I love the paranormal stories that could be real, just that little twist to reality that makes it more than is revealed. This is the first in the Krewe of Hunters series – Jane Everett comes to an old west town to help identify a skull and runs into Sheriff Sloan Trent. Both are hiding secrets about themselves that ignite as they grow closer. I’ll be continuing in this series!

Darkness Dawns (Immortal Guardians, #1)Darkness Dawns by Dianne Duvall

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A new twist to the vampire tale. These guys are immortal guardians, protecting mankind from vamps who go mad after a few years. But there’s an older vamp with his sights directly on Roland Warbrook. Sarah Bingham is just an innocent bystander, or so she thinks. I love Roland, he’s a loner and plans to stay that way – yeah. Dianne Duvall has other plans for him. This is the first in a series and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Get Lucky (Tall, Dark & Dangerous, #9)Get Lucky by Suzanne Brockmann

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What do you do when the perfect blonde Ken doll walks in? Sydney Jameson just shakes her head, they’re not going to get rid of her. A friend was brutalized and she’s going to work on the task force and write the exclusive when they catch this guy. Lucky O’Donlon isn’t getting the reaction he’s used to from a woman and why does she keep slipping and calling him Ken? This unlikely pair get to know each other as only Suzanne does it and I loved it. Had me laughing out loud in places, but the suspense in real. Enjoy!

Ravishing in Red (The Rarest Blooms, #1)Ravishing in Red by Madeline Hunter

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this obviously but I think one of the things I liked best was the more realistic relationship between Audrianna and Sebastian. She doesn’t have stars in her eyes and expects that love will win out. She’s more pragmatic than that. To me that’s a stronger, more real heroine. She’s more than willing to look after herself. Sebastian has his eyes open as well and has been honest with her – refreshing! These were some of the most 3-dimensional characters I’ve read in a long time. You’ll enjoy it.

Gnome on the RangeGnome on the Range by Jennifer Zane

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Okay, full disclosure, I won this book at the Sizzling Summer Reads and I was charmed out of my shoes. I love Jane – first person can throw me, but not this time. I was right there with her and having a wonderful time. Jane’s mother-in-law, Goldie has to be one of my favorite characters of all time. Jane is a divorcee-widow (read it to make sense) raising her two boys and working for her mother-in-law at Goldilocks, the adult store in Bozeman, Montana. She stumbles into a conspiracy and a hot firefighter and everything ignites. You’ll enjoy this one!

Flowers for AlgernonFlowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Flowers for Algernon is a science fiction story begun as a short story in 1959 and later turned into a novel. I’m still sitting with it – it was beautifully written but so sad and, unfortunately still hit so many truths even today. I must admit the politically incorrect speech caught me off guard– it’s been a long time since I’ve heard some of the terms that were normal for that time. The narrator is Charlie and he is mentally retarded, but he has friends and people that look after him. After experimental surgery (he is the first human subject) his IQ, like the mouse Algernon, increases exponentially, much faster than his emotional abilities. Through his reports he records his progress and we learn along with him how things really are in and around his life. A classic and well worth the read.

Clann Doone (Aurelia #3)Clann Doone by Cyn Haydn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I felt like I was coming home to these characters. This is the third book of the Aurelia series and I think my favorite so far. There’s enough story for two books packed in. Auric and Thoralf are settling into being together when the clan expands exponentially. Twin seal shifters (yes there are two seals on the cover!) adopt them or the other way around, and the Blue Dragon wyvern that lives next door expands as well. New characters and new adventures deepen this story – I’m already clamoring for the next one. You hit it out of the park, Cyn.

Someone Else's Daughter (Miranda's Rights, #1)Someone Else’s Daughter by Linsey Lanier

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Miranda Steele is a very strong woman, which I like. She’s been through a lot and it’s made her stronger if not completely likeable. Wade Parker is mature enough to put up with her and hopefully strong enough to blunt her harsh edges. I enjoyed the book, how could I not like someone named Steele, but kept being taken out of the story by the editing. A good reading out-loud would have caught 90% of these and I hope she does that in the future.

Comanche Haven The Loflin LegacyComanche Haven The Loflin Legacy by Catherine Wolffe

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I like these characters. Celia is a half-breed Comanche, Seth is a Texas rancher. They’ve loved each other since they were young, and a distance of years hasn’t made the difference either thought it had. When tragedy brings they together, Seth is determined that he won’t lose her again. Catherine is a new writer with a strong voice. Her portrayal of the prejudice of the time is spot on. I’ll be watching for her next works.

A most intriguing beginning – left for dead Ellis doesn’t expect to be found, much less rescued by someone he could care about. Jake is just as stunned when he is the rescuer. This is the first in a series and I’d like to see how they develop. Both characters have the potential for some great indepth growth. (Think Jules and Robin!). And I love the cover!

This is my first Allie Bates book, but I’ll be back. This Scottish story went farther back in history than I usually read and I enjoyed that history immensely. Branwyn and Llewellyn are complex and fully drawn characters which is important to me – I felt as though I knew them. No spoilers, I don’t do that, but if you’re into Scottish Highlander genre, don’t miss this one.

Mari Saguna was brought up sheltered. It wasn’t until she was nearly alone in the world that she discovered she was a witch. She had no idea of the other paranormal beings that had helped shape her destiny. Nicholai was enchanted against his will at their first meeting. With neither able to trust anyone, they are called upon to save each other from a mutual enemy and rescue those most precious to each of them.

I enjoyed this. Now I need to go investigate to see if there’s a prequel telling Marcus and Mari’s mother’s story.

This book is hard to classify, except that I really liked it. It took me into places I’m unfamiliar with, which is a good thing. I knew nothing about the subculture of freegans and now I have to go drink some chocolate like the varieties described in this book! The eclectic group of friends that surround, support and are family to Vanessa drew me in as well. The characters are well drawn and 3-dimensional. Wait until you “see” Javier. I can’t remember any books that have given me a glimpse of luchadoras and dumpster diving and home shrines. You’re in a whirlwind of a treat with this one.

SEALed with a Ring (SEALed, #3)SEALed with a Ring by Mary-Margret Daughtridge

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Every time I read Mary Margaret I think that hero is my favorite. These guys get under your skin and are as real as flesh and blood. Davy Graziano is perfect – in body, face and mind or is when JJ Caruthers meets him. But that last deployment spoils some things for him. And she’s too embarrassed by their first meeting to look too closely at the changes. But for right now at least, they need each other. Since either have ever needed anyone before, it’s a tough lesson to learn. Don’t miss this one – third in a series you do not want to miss!

I don’t usually head for sweet when I’m picking my heat setting but I did enjoy this one. Addie Caine suddenly finds herself with a ready made family, not to mention a job and a life and no time to get ready to be a parent. Giff Baker is a workaholic who has taken a job for a friend, who isn’t really one. Addie certainly makes a strong impression on their first meeting, and the tale goes from there. A good beach or rainy weekend read.

I really like this series. Maybe it’s because I had seven uncles and an aunt and tons of cousins myself growing up and all but the baby uncle have been or were married over 50 years – he’s close. It all feels so familiar and warm. In A Slower, Lower Leap, Logan, the baby of the family takes on more than he saw coming with a ready-made family and a special one at that. Lizzy doesn’t trust easily, she can’t with what she’s gone through but that Delaney family leaves no one behind. Enjoy!!

Really enjoyed this book. Now if I had any sense I would have seen this was #2 and read it before I read The Bride Wore Pearls, but it was kind of nice knowing what was going to happen – I felt like an insider. Anais de Rohan is my kind of heroine – strong and willing to take chances in the right situation. I admit I had wanted to know more about Lord Bessett since I had “met” him in Pearls, but didn’t have a good sense of him. A wonderful beach read – go for it.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well I need a shower. Cherry writes the kind of heroine I love – a strong kickass woman who takes no guff. Isis does that for me. Thorne doesn’t know what he’s gotten himself into. The descriptions of Egypt don’t exactly make me want to rush over – hot, dust, thirsty, scorpions, but it all felt like I was there. For an action packed adventure, don’t miss this one!

A Slower Lower Life (Slower Lower Series, Book 2)A Slower Lower Life by Lila Munro

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It had to be fiction because there’s no one like Kurt in real life. The oldest of eight children and born responsible, he’s still not found ‘the one’ for himself. He’s come close, but there are too many brothers stealing time. Deidre knows nothing about families, large or small, and is only there to support her best friend through her wedding – she thought. Neither one of these people sees it coming, but when their worlds collide . . . Lila does this so well. This is the second book of the Slower Lower Series – now I gotta find out about the baby brother.

As with all of Suzanne’s work I love this, but the narrator for this book is an all-time favorite. Jamie has come back to haunt his great grandson and while he’s there he might as well clean up some old mysteries that linger and one new one that becomes very dangerous. Of course most people think AJ’s crazy – there are no ghosts. Unfortunately Alison thinks he’s crazy too. Can AJ save all of them before he’s carted off to the loony bin? You’ll like this one!

This is a departure for me. I read everything, and enjoy fantasy and epic adventures but I was unfamiliar with Chinese folklore. Troy fixed that for me with this engrossing book about three young women with incredible powers that they are unaware of for most of their young lives. This tale begins (I hope!) a series of good versus evil against the an evil emperor of China that has brought all of the nations together, not in peace but through cruelty.

Troy pulled me in and never let go – try this one and learn something completely new. You’ll enjoyt it! And thanks for the glossary at the end, but I waited and read it last!

This was a fun read. I’m not a shoe aficionado (that was Mom) but it was a hoot to read about them. Marc Waterson, a VP at Bellagio shoes is looking for a wife – the wrong way. Jenny Prillaman is going smaller, looking for a hot guy to borrow for a short time. Her designs and people handling skills bring them together. A great cozy weekend book – go for it!

Tall, Dark And Dangerous (Tall, Dark and Dangerous, #1-2)Tall, Dark And Dangerous by Suzanne Brockmann

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Just finished Tall, Dark and Dangerous which includes the two books – Prince Joe and Forever Blue. And I can’t tell you which one I enjoyed more. I loved them both. Two very different tales of Suzanne’s incredible SEALs and both thoroughly lickable men.

Joe has to assume the identity of a prince to save his life, as well as the lovely media consultant,Veronica assisting him. Rough, New Jersey Joe has to come off as polished, educated and even more charming than the prince. The scene with Cindy will shatter your heart.

Blue, the southern good ole boy returns to his childhood home to watch his step brother marry his old girlfriend. When the groom is murdered, Blue is set up to take the blame. Good thing the little girl he had helped so long ago, Lucy is a policewoman now.

Sit back and enjoy!

So Close to You (So Close to You, #1)So Close to You by Rachel Carter

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I don’t read a lot of YA but I have to say the few I have read recently have been excellent. Rachel caught me with this story woven between now and WWII and reeled me in. Of course I’m going to have to read the next one because that cliff hanger was a doozy. Go for it! (I do love that Tesla has been a main character is my last two reads!)
*****
Odd Apocalypse (Odd Thomas, #5)Odd Apocalypse by Dean Koontz

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love Odd Thomas, I’ve been reading about him since he first hit the stage back in ’07. What I didn’t realize is that I’ve missed several of them and now they’re graphic novels. Who knew. Need to hit to comic book store. In this one Odd has taken refuge in a very different kind of retreat, though no less scary that others he has been drawn to by his ‘gifts’. I got lost a little in the description of Tesla’s machine, but the premise and the characters were as wild as I’ve come to expect from Koontz. You’ll like this one.
*****
Out of the DarknessOut of the Darkness by Lilly Gayle

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A different take on the vampire with a conscience. Lilly Gayle has a super premise here – could vampirism be a virus and ultimately curable? The good doctor is more than willing to try with sexy Vincent as the prize. The twist at the end leaves you panting for the sequel, which I understand is coming soon – Embrace the Darkness.

Christmas in Lucky Harbor: Simply Irresistible/the Sweetest ThingChristmas in Lucky Harbor: Simply Irresistible/the Sweetest Thing by Jill Shalvis

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Christmas in Lucky Harbor is the first two in a trilogy about “Traeger” sisters and a delight to read. I wish I knew where Lucky Harbor was so that I could enjoy a town with such hunks living in it. The first story – Simply Irresistible – is the story of the middle sister, Maddy, the mousy one. Jax is there to hopefully help bring out the best in her. The second is The Sweetest Thing with the older sister, Tara and her secrets that have kept her from happiness for so long. Ford is there to bring out the best in both of them. Now have to go find Head Over Heels, because I can’t leave the baby sister Chloe hanging without Sawyer!
*****
Raynia's MagicRaynia’s Magic by Eden Glenn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Uh, wow. I need to go find an Amethyst. Very hot, erotic M/M/F fiction. This was a quick read, and just right for a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon. Enjoy yourself!

*****
True IdentityTrue Identity by Lila Munro

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’m still learning about this culture and this book helped. I really enjoyed the interaction between Steph and Jillian. Lila lets me see these characters as people and not just erotica pawns (though that’s hot). They both have secrets and have to learn to trust one another. Lila – I’d like to learn more about Steph as the series continues! Sit back and enjoy…

*****
BreatheBreathe by Elena Dillon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Elena knocked it out of the park on the first swing. I don’t read a lot of YA, but I had to check Elena’s out. The characters feel real and their emotions are right there. The family has managed to survive a horrific period and has adjusted, but is it finally time to be in the world again? Check this one out!
*****
Private PirouettePrivate Pirouette by Lila Munro

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is my favorite of Lila’s books so far. Sexy and hot at times, but also a wonderful story of two people who don’t know how to be with someone else. Piper is independent as hell and Alec is, on the surface, your typical horndog Marine. But that’s the surface. Lila lets you into their lives to see what they’re made of. Reminded me of Suzanne Brockman’s stories. I really enjoyed this one.
*****
No Place for a LadyNo Place for a Lady by Jade Lee

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

You know by now I love strong women. Jade delivered. Fanny has a mind of her own in a time where that was not appreciated, much less encouraged. She is not willing to back down and be less than she is, even knowing her life could be easier. Marcus’s mother might make a great role model for her. Check it out.
*****
Flood (Flood, #1)Flood by Stephen Baxter

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really wanted to like this book. It’s a fascinating premise and I read it to the end, but I wanted more. The seas are rising and small band of loosely fitting survivors remain in contact for years. But I wanted to know more about the characters – why had they been thrust together in the first place? In many places I felt as though I were reading a textbook and while I did learn and was able to follow some of the science, I got lost a few times. If you’re into hard science fiction, you need to check it out.
*****
Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson, #4)Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a ride! Of course I’m already chomping for the next one. Charley’s trauma reads real and she’s still got a lot to work out. Fortunately she had the family and friends to help her through. Shouldn’t take more than 15-20 books to work it all out – are you listening Darynda?? If you haven’t started this series, get moving!
*****
Bastian (The Lords of Satyr #6)Bastian by Elizabeth Amber
I think this one was my favorite of the second trilogy – Bastian had flaws and lived with them. His ability to follow Silvia through color really struck a note with me. Thank you, Elizabeth. A great series!
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

*****
Angel Unborn (Deadly Sins, #1)Angel Unborn by Andris Bear

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Andris hit it out of the park and gave me a whole new vision of the afterlife. I do love my kick-ass heroines and Joey does not disappoint. Enjoyed a touch of that same flavor as Darynda Jones and I can’t wait for the next one. Thanks Andris!

*****
Helpless HeartsHelpless Hearts by Lilly Gayle

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Just finished reading Lilly Gayle’s latest and it lived up to what I know to expect when I read her. I loved it. A disreputable gunslinger, at least in his own eyes, has returned home. He finds he is not quite ready to see the girl he thought he was over. She’s grown now and even more beautiful, but taken – by his only friend. How can he get some honor back with that hanging over his head? If you like strong women, this is the book for you! Enjoy!
*****
Just Like Heaven (Smythe-Smith Quartet #1)Just Like Heaven by Julia Quinn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It certainly was – heavenly reading that is. I laughed out loud more than once, which is unusual for me reading this kind of book. The relationship between Honoria and Marcus is certainly fraught with peril. You have to feel sorry for the poor guy – he couldn’t possibly see what he was getting into and she didn’t mean to almost kill him. You’re really gonna like this one!
*****
Touch of Danger (Three Worlds, #1)Touch of Danger by Carol A. Strickland

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Gotta say I loved it. I’m a long-time reader of “graphic novels” though they weren’t called that when I started. My love of super heroes dates back that long and this one, showing the insights into the heroes, was a blast! Sit back and enjoy.

*****
Smooth Talking Stranger (Travises, #3)Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had never read Lisa before and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love strong women and Lisa crafts a different kind of strong woman with lovely vulnerabilities and hits all the right notes. I want to see what else she’s done.

*****
Dane (The Lords of Satyr, #5)Dane by Elizabeth Amber

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I liked this one. More in-depth story that the previous one with a strong female character (of course I’m going to like it!). No spoilers, but I’d like to know more about her and her abilities as compared to his. You should sit back and lose yourself in the series.

*****
Identity Crisis

Identity Crisis by Lila Munro

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If you’re into BDSM, you’ve found your site. Heavily X-rated (is that NC-17 now?) and will keep you awake. Now, do I trust Chad’s partner… I’ll have to get back to you.

*****
AuricAuric by Cyn Hayden

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A great sequel to Aurelia. Was surprised at the M/M relationship at first, but it was well done, and I just drifted into it. They were good together and it felt real to me. I like that in a book. Now that cliffhanger . . . Cyn, are you writing now?

*****
The Word for World is ForestThe Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It’s Ursula K. LeGuin, so you go in knowing it’s going to be great and it was. Written in 1972, it’s a kinder, gentler Avatar. I only wish it had been longer.

*****
The Lost Gate (Mither Mages, #1)The Lost Gate by Orson Scott Card

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I’ve read a lot of Orson Scott Card and always enjoy them. I found this one a little hard to get into and the lead is definitely not his most likable character – that said, I’m going to have to check out the next one because I am intrigued. I’ll get back to you . . .
*****
Kiss the Dead (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #21)Kiss the Dead by Laurell K. Hamilton

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I’m glad to say that Anita is finally coming to terms with her relationships. I did enjoy the book, though not as much as past Anita Blake stories. I guess I wanted more of the case and less of the sex – am I getting old? I’m comfortable now with Nathaniel and Micah and of course
Jean-Claude, it’s the rest I keep confusing. And I will keep reading them!

*****
Dominic (The Lords of Satyr, #4)Dominic by Elizabeth Amber

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Uh. wow. If you’re into kink and extremely graphic sex, run don’t walk over to this series. Dominic is the 4th in the series and yes I’ve read them all with jaw dropped and hubby glancing sideways at the covers. Hey, it’s good for him! This one took a little while to get into because of the time span from the first three, but it didn’t take long. Obviously. Enjoy!

*****
Third Grave Dead Ahead (Charley Davidson #3)Third Grave Dead Ahead by Darynda Jones

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Uh, wow. Darynda, you scared me this time. No spoilers but you really need to read this one. The series just keeps getting better and I can’t wait for 4! Run, don’t walk.

*****
Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy, #2)Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was so much more complicated that the first one – I am stunned at her research. To have such distinguished members of history trotting in and out of the house all day just like regular people was a fascinating twist. You definitely need to read these books in order and I’m hoping she’s well on her way with #3, because I need some ends “tied up.”

*****
Born To Darkness (Fighting Destiny, #1)Born To Darkness by Suzanne Brockmann

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well she’s done it to me again! Suzanne writes such rich incredible characters that I know I would recognize them if I passed them on the street. Here’s hoping this is at least a twenty book series (with time out to check in on the Troubleshooters of course) I love the science fiction bent to this book and eagerly await the next. Thank you, Suzanne!

*****
Timeless (Parasol Protectorate, #5)Timeless by Gail Carriger

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This one started out a little slower, but it certainly made up for it in the end. A grand tie up for a wonderful series. Gail outdid herself capping this off. You will really enjoy this very proper progression through Victorian times. Just make certain your cravet is well tied and your hat on firmly.

*****
Sorority SistersSorority Sisters by Claudia Welch

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It’s a little scary – I lived this, even the dates are good and she captured it beautifully. This is really what happens when you grow your own family and Claudia nailed it. Already sent out a message to “the girls” to get on the stick and read this now. You should too.

*****
Arctic RisingArctic Rising by Tobias S. Buckell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have not read Tobia Buckell before but I’m going to have to go back and look at his stuff. This was non-stop action in a future that isn’t that hard to imagine. Different and interesting characters than I’m used to and I really enjoyed that. It made me think. Check it out.

*****
Hit List (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #20)Hit List by Laurell K. Hamilton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was back to the old Anita and I did so enjoy seeing Edward/Ted again. The “new” guy with all those Tigers was interesting and I’m looking forward to see more of him. A lot less sex and more story – I really liked the story. If you’re an Anita fan, you’ll like this one.

*****
More Than a Stranger (Sealed With a Kiss, #1)More Than a Stranger by Erin Knightley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This did not read like a first novel. It was excellent and I see a long career for Erin. The characters were fully developed and it was easy to care about them. I’m already looking forward to the next one. Highest rec – if you love historicals, go for it!

*****
Heartless (The Parasol Protectorate, #4)Heartless by Gail Carriger

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

She still makes me laugh and I adore Lord Akeldama. He’s devious but so proper about it all. Wanted to see more of Conall but he was there when needed. Too many spoilers to be given away with anything I say, but that ending has me clamoring for what’s up next. Enjoy yourself!

*****
Breaking the Rules (Troubleshooters, #16)Breaking the Rules by Suzanne Brockmann

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m exhausted – I raced through the Nevada heat alternately gulping and then savoring Breaking the Rules. I loved it. I’ve held off reading this one, choosing other things in the pile because as far as I can tell this is the last completed full length Troubleshooters book. But Suzanne, it cannot be the last one, I’ve just caught up, right? Let’s face it Jules and Robin, Izzy and Eden, Danny and Jenni, Max and Gina, Jenk and Lindsey, Dave and Sophia, Deck and Tracy and of course Sam and Alyssa are friends of mine now and I need to touch base with them often. Yes, I do have the first of your next series and since I know your writing, I’ll love it. Sigh, I guess I’ll start over at the beginning…
*****
Second Grave on the Left (Charley Davidson, #2)Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones

You left me there?!? Good grief. This ride was better than the first and I loved that one. Darynda is a must read for me. I love cocky dialog. Join me!

Blameless (Parasol Protectorate, #3)Blameless by Gail Carriger

SEALed with a Promise (SEALed, #2)SEALed with a Promise by Mary-Margret Daughtridge

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mary-Margret pulled me in again. I love her SEALs when they’re off-duty – no spoilers but you need to read about these guys and the wedding cake! One of my favorite scenes ever. I feel like I know these guys. You’ll want to too!

*****
Nardi PointNardi Point by Nancy LaPonzina

Merlyn's Raven

Merlyn’s Raven by Rose Vanden Eynden

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have always loved the Arthurian legends and read them since I was young. This one goes to the top of my list. An incredible story that I didn’t see coming (which always delights me) that reads true and strong in this genre. Highest recommendation – Rose is someone to watch.

*****
Changeless (Parasol Protectorate, #2)Changeless by Gail Carriger

Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1)

Soulless by Gail Carriger

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well I am madly in love with Miss Tarabotti. Kick ass with a bustle and very well educated in a lot of things that Victorian ladies did not know – or at least didn’t admit. I laughed out loud several times and didn’t dare explain. Don’t want to spoil it for anyone. If you’re into vampires and werewolves AND historicals dive in.

*****
First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1)First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I like her style. Kick ass heroine with two guys in pursuit, whether she wants to play along or not. What an incredible job she has – even if no one outside the family wants to believe it. Laughed out loud at the dialog. Enjoy!

Zero Sum Book 1: No Longer In PrintZero Sum Book 1: No Longer In Print by Russell Blake

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Okay, not what I was expecting. Russell drew me in with his incredible research and now I have to read the other two. I don’t read a lot of spy type thrillers, but every once in a while I get caught. Give it a try!

The Moon Maze Game

The Moon Maze Game by Larry Niven

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve been waiting for this. I read Dream Park and the Voodoo Game ages ago. These games are so cool and I love seeing it from both sides. These two authors (written with Steven Barnes) mesh like a dream. If you’ve read the others, it’s what you wanted to read next. If you haven’t yet – what’s keeping you??

*****
77 Shadow Street77 Shadow Street by Dean Koontz

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Need to start out saying I love Dean Koontz and have and will read anything he writes, but this one did not hit the mark with me. I kept getting the many characters confused, though it finally did come together in the end, I had to work to keep at it. Very unusual for me with Dean.

I do love the characters in these books, they’re old friends by now but I can’t help still being shocked by some of the sex. Ménage a trois, eh, this is ménage a sept or more. I get tired just reading about it, then I need a cigarette and I don’t smoke. I like the plan, can’t wait to see if it works.
